WhatsApp has rolled out its Bill Payments service in India, which enables users to search for, manage, and pay their household and utility bills through the messaging app itself. The feature is made possible through the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, eliminating the necessity for users to switch between different applications for making bill payments.

The service has been introduced in support of bill payments for 22,722 billers across 30 different categories, including electricity bills, gas bills, water bills, FASTag, insurance, credit card payments, and loan payments. The rollout of the feature is happening gradually and will soon be available to all Android and iOS users in India.

How WhatsApp Bill Payments Work

According to WhatsApp, the new feature will add to the existing range of payments available on WhatsApp that includes options such as mobile recharges and other transactions. 

To use the Bill Payments feature on WhatsApp, one has to:

  • Launch the WhatsApp app and click on the ₹ icon on the homepage.
  • Select any bill category and biller.
  • Enter and verify account details.
  • Verify the bill amount fetched by them.
  • Complete the payment.

One can make payments using UPI, debit cards, and credit cards.

Features Available With WhatsApp Bill Payments 

WhatsApp has also added the ability to get a household bills summary, making it easy to see the bills. Previously paid billers will appear on the Payments Home screen, providing quick one-tap access.

Another feature in WhatsApp is the ability to manage different accounts within a single biller. This helps those individuals who have to pay bills for other accounts as well, such as their home account, office account, or relatives’ accounts.

Popular bill categories will show up on the Payments Home Screen, and other categories can be accessed from the See All button, which contains over 20 categories in total.

The new feature is powered by Bharat Connect (BBPS) and supports 22,722 billers across 30 categories, available to all WhatsApp users in India through Android and iOS platforms soon.
