Sony is reportedly planning to revive the Killzone series with a new project currently in the early stages of production at PlayStation. The upcoming title is said to be a first-person shooter based on the franchise, with Guerrilla Games, the original developer of the series, reportedly working on the project alongside an external studio.
According to a report by MP1st, the current Killzone game may be a remake or remaster of a previous one within the Killzone series. It is yet to be confirmed which Killzone game is being revised in the current project. According to the report, this project is in the “very early stages of development”, with no official statement likely coming soon.
Details on the New Killzone Project
Fixing Horizon Hunters Gathering is reportedly Guerrilla Games’ priority at the moment. Once those improvements are completed, a team at Guerrilla is expected to return to work on the Killzone project.
It is reported that fixing the Horizon Hunters Gathering is the current priority of Guerrilla Games, and once it is done, the same developers will continue working on the Killzone project.
According to the reports, Guerrilla Games will also focus on creating the third mainline entry of the Horizon series after completing the Killzone project.
The upcoming remake/remaster of the Killzone franchise may turn out to be a complete reboot for the first-person shooter franchise. Furthermore, according to the reports, Sony and Guerrilla Games might be collaborating with People Can Fly on the project.
This Polish development studio, which is also co-developing a game titled Gears of War: E-Day in the future, has entered into an agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2025 to develop a game with the codename “Project Delta” using an existing Sony property.
Killzone Franchise Background
Sony and Guerrilla Games have not released any official statement regarding the future of the Killzone franchise yet.
Killzone: Shadow Fall was the most recent release of the franchise, which was introduced as a PlayStation 4 launch title in 2013. After that, the attention of Guerrilla Games shifted to the Horizon franchise as they developed:
1. Horizon Zero Dawn
2. Horizon Forbidden West
There hasn’t been a new game from the Killzone series in over a decade, which makes this rumoured remake/remaster effort very interesting.
Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Project Updates
According to Bloomberg, Sony has recently decided to relaunch Horizon Hunters Gathering, following negative reviews of its live-service elements.
It looks like the multiplayer game has not been cancelled but rather redesigned into something more like the original concept of a co-op title.
Horizon Hunters Gathering was unveiled in February as a live-service co-op PvE game within the Horizon universe. It seems that Guerrilla Games has decided to strip away the live-service features from the game and scale down its ambitions.
