22.79L students. Two years of preparation. One WhatsApp document exposed.

On May 12, 2026, the NTA made an official statement cancelling NEET 2026 examination – the undergraduate medical examination conducted on May 3 is null and void. The cause: a document comprising around 410 questions was doing rounds on WhatsApp groups ranging between 15 to 30 days before the examination, with around 120 questions from the Chemistry portion being identical to the paper.

The exam did not leak on the day of the exam. It was leaked weeks back. The students took three hours of questions which someone had already seen.

Why was the NEET 2026 exam cancelled?

The Special Operations Group in Rajasthan questioned more than 150 students, their friends, and even their guardians. This investigation led them to find an individual from Haryana, who had been the one sending the papers, which were forwarded to him from Nashik, Maharashtra.

A significant similarity between the leaked documents and the real NEET-UG paper was noticed by SOG. A mastermind was taken into custody in Jaipur. The Maharashtra state police arrested 45 people who were related to the leaked paper.

The concerned government body handed over the case to CBI, following the report made by NTA to central agencies on May 8, nine days after the examination. Nine days. The paper was in circulation well before that. For a step-by-step report on how the leakage happened, there is a great article by India TV News on the same.

What students are saying

According to Aspirant Shreya Jaiswal, speaking to PTI, she had prepared for the past two years and felt that the NEET 2026 exam cancellation was “highly unjust.” Another aspirant, Aakriti Rai, stated that parents put their expectations, money, and sentiments into preparing for the NEET exam and that now, “all our efforts have gone in vain.”

Another quote from an aspirant by ANI resonates with many: “Our examination was going well. We studied 15 hours. It is making us feel really bad that it has been leaked.”

She studies 15 hours a day. Some other person had the paper with him for the past month.

The pressure these children have to bear is real. Over 22 lakh aspirants are in doubt and concerned about the physical and psychological impact on the younger generation. If you’re a student or a parent struggling to cope at the moment, here’s a piece on mental fatigue and why you feel exhausted even when you haven’t done much.

What happens after NEET 2026 exam cancelled

NTA has confirmed a re-exam will be held. New dates will be announced within 7 to 10 days. Students don’t need to register again — existing application details remain valid.

Cold comfort for kids already on their second or third attempt. Before the re-exam chaos fully kicks in, it’s worth remembering that preparing the body and mind before sitting a major exam matters more than most students realise. Sleep, routine, and mental readiness aren’t soft advice. They’re the difference between a clear head and a blank one.

This has happened before

NEET was far from fair even before paper-leak controversies. The 2024 NEET-UG controversy cost NTA its credibility. The government promised reforms. Stricter protocols. Better security.

May 3, 2026 showed how much changed.

The hard question isn’t who leaked the paper. The CBI will probably figure that out. The harder question is structural: an exam where 22 lakh students compete for a fixed number of seats, conducted once a year, by a single agency, on physical paper, creates enormous incentive to cheat. And apparently someone, somewhere, keeps finding a way.

The students waiting for a NEET 2026 re-exam date didn’t make this system. They’re just stuck inside it.

Re-exam dates will be posted on neet.nta.nic.in. Keep checking the official site.

Which agency is probing into NEET 2026 exam leakage?

No, it is not required. NTA assured that registrations made already would be valid, so you do not have to apply again. You will get fresh admit card after announcement of new dates of examination.

There is no fixed date yet. However, according to NTA officials, new dates will be declared in 7 to 10 days from the announcement of cancellation on May 12.

For all candidates in India. The entire NEET test conducted on May 3 is canceled, not just the results of some states.

No. The 2024 NEET-UG controversy also followed the same trend, tarnishing the image of NTA. The NEET 2026 exam cancellation again follows the same trend after two years.
