Apple says stores will hold only a small number of iPhone Duo units when sales open on Friday. Buyers in India will need an existing online order.

Apple confirmed that “limited” iPhone Duo stock will be available for walk-in customers without pre-orders when its first foldable goes on sale on October 23. The company gave the statement on Wednesday.

That settles a week of rumour. Store staff had reportedly been told to warn shoppers without a pre-order that they’d leave disappointed. Apple now says some units will be on the shelves, but not many.

Where you can walk in and buy

Online pickup and limited walk-in purchases will be available in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico and much of the UK and Europe.

Where you can’t

Mainland China, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the UAE will only have units for customers who already ordered online. If you’re in India and didn’t pre-order, Friday is a day to look at the phone, not buy it. Macau is the exception: it’s walk-in only, with limited inventory.

Why the stock is so thin

Initial online orders sold out in minutes and pushed delivery for some customers to January. Pre-orders opened on October 16.

Production has been the problem for weeks. Nikkei Asia reported in early September that output was only a few hundred units a day by late August. Analysts say the tight-fitting hinge may take Apple time to build in volume.

Apple hasn’t said how many units it made, or how many each store will get.

What to do if you want one

  • Already pre-ordered: collect it on Friday or wait for delivery.
  • In the US, Canada, the UK or Australia without an order: queue early, and expect a short line to end at a closed door.
  • In India: check Apple’s online store, since pickup availability for non-pre-orders may open later.

Apple’s own online store has told shoppers without a pre-order to check back on Saturday, October 24, for pickup, though that doesn’t promise stock.
