Apple AirPods with built-in cameras are reportedly planned for a 2027 launch, despite a recent software leak that revealed how the upcoming AI-powered earbuds could work.
The leak further led to speculation that Apple might introduce the new AirPods sooner than expected. But, as per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports, Apple has not changed its launch timelines and will continue to target 2027 for the launch of the device.
The camera-enabled AirPods are expected to become Apple’s first-ever products in the growing AI wearables market.
Apple AirPods Camera Features Spotted in macOS Leak
Earlier this week, it was reported that AirPods were found in a beta version of macOS Tahoe 26. 7.
A demonstration video had appeared that clearly showed how the earbuds could use Apple’s Visual Intelligence technology. In the particular video, a user holds up a book and asks the device to save information about it for later.
The leak led to speculation that Apple could be preparing the product for an earlier launch, particularly with the company’s September iPhone event approaching.
Why Apple AirPods With Camera May Not Arrive Until 2027?
As per the initial reports, Apple had earlier made a decision to launch the product in 2026 and even started advanced testing with employees earlier this year.
But the company is believed to have faced software- and supply-chain-related challenges as the device moved closer to production. Due to these issues, the launch date has been pushed to 2027.
Though Apple has not officially announced the camera-enabled AirPods, the final launch date and specifications can still change.
How Would the Cameras on AirPods Work?
The cameras on the rumored AirPods are not expected to work like normal smartphone cameras.
Rather, Apple could make use of smaller, lower-resolution sensors to understand the wearer’s surroundings. This visual information could then support Siri, Visual Intelligence, and other AI features.
For example, a user may look at the object or a landmark and ask Siri for information about it. The device could also recognise objects and save useful information for later.
Previous software references have suggested that Apple is still experimenting with wearable devices that use cameras to clearly understand the objects, visual properties, and spatial information around the user.
Apple is Reportedly Developing Two Versions
Apple is said to be working on two different versions of the camera-equipped wearable.
One version, known internally as B790, is believed to be based on the current AirPods Pro design. It may also be the device shown in the leaked macOS device.
A second model, reportedly codenamed B798, could feature a larger redesign and include additional sensors.
Well, these details remain unconfirmed, and Apple has not shared any official information about either of the devices.
Apple Now Expands Its Focus on AI Wearables
The AirPods with cameras could form an important part of Apple’s wider push into AI-based wearable technology.
The company is said to be developing smart glasses and other camera-enabled wearable devices, though nothing has been officially confirmed.
